DESCRIPTION:St. Louis was an active stop on the Underground Railroad with i
ts close proximity to the free state of Illinois. One of St. Louis's most
prominent conductors on the Underground Railroad was Mary Meachum. The wid
ow of a free\, black minister John Berry Meachum spent years with her husb
and teaching both free and enslaved blacks how to read and write\, defying
Missouri law. In May 1855\, Mary led a boat of freedom-seekers on a midni
ght crossing of the Mississippi River toward Alton\, Illinois. Upon arrivi
ng at shore\, the party was met by law enforcement and all arrested\, incl
uding Meachum. While the fates of most of the enslaved are unknown\, Mary
was released from custody shortly after the event and never charged. Local
Meachum historian Angela DaSilva will discuss the St. Louis and the Under
ground Railroad and the brave individuals who sought to help those seeking
freedom in a free state.\n\nFee info: The program is free.\n\nRegistratio

DESCRIPTION:Dr. Curt Fields will discuss his latest book\, Unconditional Su
rrender: Ulysses S. Grant in the Civil War.\n\nDr. Curt Fields has had a s
trong interest in the Civil War since he was about 12 years old. That inte
rest led him\, ultimately\, to portray General Grant in first-person. In “
being” General and President Grant\, he developed a deep respect for the c
omplex man that Grant was—a man who has\, regrettably\, been shunted into
the shadows of history. In the 21st century\, Curt has been a police offic
	er and hostage negotiator\; a high school teacher and later a principal\;
and a university instructor. In 2022\, Curt was elected to the board of di
rectors of the Ulysses S. Grant Association. He serves on the board of dir
